Director Special Projects

Job Title:Director Special Projects
Company:Open Text Corporation (aka OpenText)
When:June, 2002 – May, 2003
Location:Based in Waterloo with frequent travel throughout North America
Brief Description:

Following the so-called "dot com boom" in which Open Text took a conservative approach came the "dot com bust" where a large number of questionable business plans failed. Open Text was flush with money and willing to purchase some of the companies as well as some of the assets of many of these failed ventures.

For approximately 1 year I travelled throughout North America but primarily in California (Silicone Valley) visiting the (sometimes empty) offices, evaluating assets, making recommendations for purchase, and aquiring storage for the time-sensitive (electronic) assets. The equipment was then categorized and prioritized for deployment throughout offices North America.

I've not much more to say except that this was an incredibly sad and unusually stressful job. Many of the failed businesses clearly were given very little notice of their demise, in some cases it seemed that the furniture was still warm from employees sitting on them. While it was no more than an opportunistic venture for Open Text and myself, it affected me very deeply and I don't think I'd want to go on such a sojourn again.
