Open Text Corporation

Arriving as approximately the 350th employee of Open Text Corporation and leaving a workforce of close to 3,500, I saw and oversaw a great deal of growth and change over the approximate 11 years of employment. Starting as a Senior System Administrator, I quickly moved up to a Director position reporting directly into Senior Management/Executive. I initiated and participated a large number of internal and external initiatives and I was the driving force bringing security issues and their resolution to the attention of the Executive and by extension the company at large.

April 1998 –> January 2009
Kinchlea Compupter Consulting

Small systems sales and support, remote and local systems administration, custom coding, security review and recommendations, network design and implementation, and computer training for the consumer, small business, and education markets. KCC was not run as a focused business, rather as a convenient business name to describe a freelance consultant with a growing set of skills and experiences. Highlights were:
 June 1990 –> April 1998
Computing and Communication Services, UWO
Virtually all computing at UWO before 1990 was done through a central service-providing department called, at the time, Computing and Communications Services (CCS). I worked on User Desk Support for CCS where I cut my computing teeth and met a lot of really decent people!

If the truth be told, my education has been varied and quite different than the ordinary route. I do not have a high-school diploma having quit at the beginning of grade 10. I was 15 at the time and was sure that I knew all I needed to to be a success in the world. I tried a few times at upgrading my education as I was a teenager, I took some high-school equivalency courses in Fanshawe College in London, Ontario and I took Basic Electricity and Electronics in Conestoga College in Waterloo, Ontario. In both cases I found that while I definitely could see the value in a formal education I had not yet found the field that excited me and I was not yet mature enough to just do it anyway. In both cases I at first excelled almost to the point of excess followed by boredom and eventual abandonment of the program.

When I hit my twenties, as I started my own handyman business called "Dave Does It All!" I realized that while I could make the business work, it was doing quite well, I still yearned for more mentally challenging things to do. I joined the University of Western Ontario and found the thing I had been missing, I found Computer Science. I schooled and worked at UWO for a decade picking up the BSc and a MSc., both in Computer Science. Though it took a number of years to regain the financial stability I had before I went back to school, I've never regretted that decision.

My Family

Nothing is more important to me than my family. I've been married to the same lovely woman, Sue Laking and together we have three wonderful children: Keegan, Kareen and Avery. They are all teenagers and they make their mum and I very proud.
