Well here it is, my first blog. I find myself sitting in front of my laptop, connected to my wireless router which is connected to my high speed DSL modem. Nothing special here right? Well, compared to my humble beginnings I sure have come a long way. Not so lond ago I was sitting in front of my Commodore 64, dialing up the BBS with my 300 baud modem. Then came my first 386DX system with a 33 kps modem, 80 mb hard drive (Yes 80 megabytes) and 2 mb of RAM. What a system! (Thanks dave. dave.kinchlea.net)
My first Pentuim computer was purchased when I went to school to study Network Administration. After that the flood gates were opened and before long I had a lot of computers, a proxy server, a Domain Controller and all networked together. I guess you could say that at this point I was bitten by "the computer bug." From this point on I have never looked back. The more I learn and discover about computing, the more I want to learn.
I worked a few small contracts after graduating from school including a fun term at ITS at the University of Western Ontario. This is where I quickly learned that I still had a lot to learn. Fortunetly shortly after finishing the contract at ITS I was contacted by Sterling Business Academy and offered the position of LAN Administrator and Instructor. What a challenging and rewarding job. The students constantly challenged me and I them and in the end I had a great success rate of passing students. I was pretty sorry when the owner of the school informed me that she was closing it down to pursue other ventures.
One good thing about the school closing was the start of Welsby Computer Consulting, my own business that still operates today. I have always thought of myself as an entrepeneur and this was a perfect fit, my own business and computers. Of course I have worked a number of contracts since including places like; IBM, London Life, Compass Group, Protek, Huron Perth Catholic School Board and a few others, but my business has always been the constant.
Things sure have changed from my humble beginings but I wouldn't want it any other way. What others take for granted when dealing with computers I see with widend eyes. The ease of connectivity, installation and integration where only fanatasy not so long ago. It all makes me wonder with anticipation as to what's next. I can't wait.
